What is a retractable screen?

To understand how a retractable screen works, think of it as a window shade turned on its side. Then picture this rolled screen completely enclosed in a thin housing that rests along the side of your door. Pull the screen across the door and the view is clear. Allow the screen to retract out of the way and it is hidden in the screen’s housing.

Does a retractable screen provide protection from insects?

Yes. Just like a sliding screen door, the ODL retractable screen will provide you with protection from insects when in use. The ODL retractable screen includes weather-stripping in both the top and bottom track to further increase your protection from these would be intruders.

Are retractable screens safe?

ODL’s is. At ODL we feel that safety is very important and that is why we have built “slam-proof” features into our retractable screen. While the screen handle does retract quickly out of your way, the ODL screen handle does not “slam” back into the housing. With ODL you do not have to worry about pinched fingers.

 

Do I need a professional installer, or can I do it myself?

No. ODL’s retractable screen is designed with the “do-it-yourself” consumer in mind. With our exclusive, patent pending, bottom track and sill plate, you are assured that our screen will install on any doorsill in the marketplace. Unlike other retractable screens in the marketplace, ODL’s screen comes ready to install and only requires a couple simple track cuts with a hacksaw.

What sort of regular maintenance is required for the screen?

You should make sure to keep your tracks clean and lubricated per installation instructions. Once a year you should check track screws to make sure they are secure.

What can be done if the screen fabric is ripped?

ODL offers replacement cartridges for the retractable screen fabric. You simply have to pull the damaged screen cartridge out, and slide the new cartridge in.

Is there ever a time that I should not operate the screen?

Yes, you should not operate your screen during freezing temperatures.

After installing screen, what should I do if my screen is not retracting quickly enough?

1. Check to make sure that your top track is not causing any binding of the screen handle. If you do have binding make sure that you installed the top track per the installation instructions. Remember, you do not want to use a square for positioning your top track.
2. Make sure your tracks are clean and free from any debris that could cause the screen handle to slow down.
3. Check your track screws to make sure that they are secure, but not too tight. Track screws that are installed too tightly can cause the track to twist, which in turn can cause the handle to bind.
4. Add a lubricant to your tracks. A regular maintenance for the retractable screen is lubricating the tracks. Use can use a lubricant such as furniture polish or WD-40.

Does the Retractable Screen come with a warranty?

Yes. ODL’s retractable screen comes with a 5-year warranty.

How do I choose the correct size?

ODL’s screens come ready sized to fit most all doors in the marketplace. Simply measure your door and select the correct screen size for you:

ODL Standard height screen = In-swing 6’8” doors
ODL Short height screen = In-swing 6’5” to 6’6” doors, or Out-swing 6’8” doors
ODL Tall height screen = In-swing 8’0” doors

Can I use a retractable screen on my sliding glass doors?

Yes. ODL has a specific screen unit for use on sliding glass doors.

Can I use a retractable screen on my double, French doors?

Yes. While 2 screens are required for double doors, ODL has designed the retractable screen to work on French door units up to 72” wide.

What colors are available?

ODL offers 3 different colors (white, bronze, and sandstone) for our standard height screen. The short and tall screens come standard in white.
