Economic Stimulus Energy Tax Credit 2009, 2010, 2011

Tax credits for ENERGY STAR® qualified doors extended through 2011

If you thought you missed your chance to earn a tax credit for installing an ENERGY STAR® qualified door enhanced with beautiful and efficient ODL doorglass, then you'll be glad to know that the door is open again. In December 2010, the federal government extended tax credits of up to $500 for ENERGY STAR® qualified doors through December 2011.

According to the U.S. EPA, qualifying doors with half-view glass or less must have a U-factor less than or equal to 0.27, while doors with glass larger than half-view must have a U-factor less than or equal to 0.32. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) must be less than or equal to 0.30 for all glass sizes. You can find the U-factor and SHGC on the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label. (Click here for an example of the NFRC label.) NFRC is the only federally recognized organization for determining the energy performance of windows, doors and skylights. Please visit the NFRC website for information concerning product performance.

ODL doorglass can be used in doors nationwide to meet ENERGY STAR® criteria as ODL offers NFRC-compliant options in all product categories.

Take advantage of this continuing opportunity to boost curb appeal, add beautiful interior light and enhance energy efficiency by installing an ENERGY STAR® qualified door enhanced with beautiful and efficient ODL doorglass. Lower your taxes by up to $1,500 with the Economic Stimulus Energy Tax Credit for 2009 and 2010

As part of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, homeowners can claim a federal tax credit of up to $1,500 when they upgrade their primary residence with energy efficient windows and exterior doors. Reduce your income tax by up to 30% of the purchase price (not including installation costs) of qualified products installed in 2009 and 2010.

The requirements for receiving a tax credit are as follows:

  • Qualified products must have NFRC certified U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings that do not exceed 0.30.
  • The products must be used to improve an existing home.
  • The home must be the taxpayer's primary residence.
  • The windows and doors must be installed and available for use between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

How to claim your tax credit
Step 1: Purchase and install qualifying ODL door glass or windows.

Step 2: Retain receipts that show the cost of the qualifying products and save the NFRC label or manufacturer's certification statement from each product. Keep these with your tax materials. Download an example of a Manufacturer's Certification Statement (360K) Adobe PDF.

Step 3: Submit your energy tax credit claim for the year the door glass or windows were installed. Consult your tax advisor for full details.

U-factor and SHGC explained
The U-factor (sometimes called U-value) measures how much heat escapes the home; the lower the number, the more heat is retained inside where it's needed. U-factor considerations are most important in colder climates. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar radiation enters the home; the lower the number, the more heat is blocked. SHGC considerations are most important in warmer climates.

Windows and doors with NFRC-certified U-factor and SHGC ratings that do not exceed 0.30 may qualify for the Economic Stimulus Energy Tax Credit.

Low-E glass ODL's Low-E glass reduces both energy loss and solar heat gain
Available as a clear door glass option, Low-E glass is made with an invisible thin metallic coating that blocks heat flow. A proven energy saver, ODL Low-E glass reduces air conditioning costs by reducing solar transmissions in the summer. In the winter, it reduces heat loss to the outside and allows solar energy to pass inside. Available in Enclosed Blinds & Shades, grilles between glass, and clear door glass.
